Plot:
A very pregnant Lady Trevlyn discovers a shocking secret that causes the death of her husband.  The same night her daughter is born. Lady Trevlyn keeps her husband's secret close to her heart with a tiny silver key. Twelve years later a youth of sixteen comes to work for her and becomes infatuated with her daughter. He also knows the terrible secret and is searching for something in relation to it.  What sinister lies has this boy told, and will young Lillian be safe?

Review:
Louisa May Alcott wrote a lot more than just Little Women, though the book and related sequels and spin-offs remain her most popular.  She also wrote many Gothic tales, which were popular back in the day. This one is a nice little story, not as over-the-top as some Gothic romances.  You can identify with the antagonist (Paul) quite easily and Lillian is not annoying when she could have been.  The mystery held my attention and the love story was cute, but possibly uncomfortable for modern readers (a 16 year old boy falling in love with a 12 year old girl).  Obviously there is nothing inappropriate between them, so over-all it's okay.

Alcott is easy to read compared to other 19th century writers and the story moves quickly. I read it during a 2 hour bus ride with plenty of time to spare.  Definitely recommend if you've never read any of Alcott's Gothic works.
